Where we are and where we've come from

Michael Bracewell

Michael Bracewell started his career in fashion in 1980, selling women's clothing at a stall in the Paddington Markets. The business originated in a small flat in Darlinghurst, Sydney, with two friends, two sewing machines and a measly budget of $1500.

In 1989 Michael opened his first Bracewell store on Oxford Street, stocking women's clothing and high-end imports such as Dries Van Noten, Costume National, and Paul Smith. A successful five-year stint with menswear was next on the cards, but a shift in the market prompted a refocus, and Michael ultimately concentrated solely on his women's range.

Bracewell is now one of Australia's leading fashion brands, providing great quality basics and individual designs for the fashion conscious female. With 4 stores, and over 120 stockists nationally, the label continues to grow, evolve and inspire.

Hayley Killigrew

Head Designer Hayler Killigrew, who has come across from Jigsaw Australia, where she worked for four years as a Senior Designer. After completing a degree in Fashion Design at Bristol University in England in 1993, Hayley accepted a position in London, which lead to extensive travel to Hong Kong, India and China. Half of her time was spent working in Hong Kong, liasing with American buyers to develop a range that would retail in American department stores, and the other half she spent designing product for the UK High Street, working with brands such as Oasis, River Island and Topshop. Enticed by postcards of sunny Aussie beaches and beautiful countryside, Hayley followed family out to Australia in 1998 and quickly began working in the industry.

Hayley's personal style is feminine yet quirky with an eclectic twist. She has a love of all things hand-made; beautiful organic objects or simple fun pieces that make you feel free and happy. No doubt these characteristics will transfer into her designs for Bracewell. Hayley said, "I've been given this great opportunity to showcase my best work as a designer. I hope to capture the essence of Bracewell while retaining true to my design ethics." Moving forward, Hayley hopes to explore the diverse fabrics available in Australia and will continue to manufacture locally where possible.
